Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it helps bind water within a skincare formula and at the surface of the skin. That can make dehydrated skin feel more comfortable and look temporarily smoother and plumper.
Why “multi-weight” matters
Hyaluronic acid comes in different molecular sizes. These sizes behave differently in a formula and on the skin’s surface. Combining them can create a layered hydration experience, but claims that topical hyaluronic acid simply “pulls water from deep skin” are an oversimplification.
What human research suggests
In a small randomized study of 36 older adults, a low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid moisturizer improved leg-skin hydration compared with a high-molecular-weight version and vehicle. It supports the importance of formulation and molecular size, but it does not mean every serum will perform identically on every face.
How to get the most from it
Apply a few drops to slightly damp skin, then seal with moisturizer. In dry conditions, the moisturizer step is especially useful. Hyaluronic acid can be used morning or evening and generally layers well with other routines.
